Daria Reviews Thousand Arms (PSX) – A PSone dating sim RPG from ATLUS
Thousand Arms follows the goggle-sporting protagonist Meis Triumph as he chases cute girls and a dark villain across the world, eventually concluding with a classic role-playing game ending. The game could probably be best described as a “romantic comedy RPG”, perhaps even “harem comedy” though it features plenty of combat as well. It was also noted for having a large amount of voice acting, rare for games of the time, and for occasionally breaking the fourth wall.
The game takes place on a “steampunk” type of world. The Dark Acolytes, a mysterious organization of cyborgs and robots, is trying to find the five legendary Sacred Flames, and bring chaos to the World in the process. Meis, a womanizing “Spirit Blacksmith” with the ability to make magical weapons, finds himself chosen to find the flames before the Dark Acolytes do.
The more intimate you become with the other female cast members, the more spells and abilities you have access to. When I played it in , it still seemed unique. Revisiting it today, it feels surprisingly shallow. In , dating sims and visual novels were nothing new. They were popular genres that were already intermingling with RPGs by the mid 90s with titles like Sakura Wars as well as Blue Breaker. That was in Japan though. While rare, some bits of the genre made it to America in the late 90s.
If you’ve ever wondered where the dating sim aspects of Persona 3 may have been inspired by, look no further. At the time of release in Japan in , Thousand Arms was a revolutionary take on traditional JRPGs by introducing a crafting system, as well as a dating mechanic. The game was developed by the now defunct Red Company, and published by Atlus.
Comic Book — Thank you so much! Glass Bell — You are so kind!! I love you, Meis! *KISS!* Gold Bell — I’ll treasure this! *KISS!* Coral Brooch
Along the way, I met a few new enemies. Nomadic Genies are, understandably, powered up versions of the regular sort. Blood Kiwis are pretty annoying, since their favored attack is a very quick jab that drains health. It only drains 8 points, though, so I figure I’m really overleveled for this area of the game. Aside from being a cyborg hawk, there’s nothing too special about this guy. What JRPG is complete without the goddamn thief enemies?
I think these guys can even steal items along with money, which really sucks. At least they carry plenty of cash. So, in the northwestern corner of the southeast continent, you can find the last of the train stops.

Thousand Arms issetina mythical world of swords and machines. You play as Meis Triumph, a young lad born into a generation of noble blacksmiths who progresses through the game encountering the usual helpful allies and cunning enemies. TA’s twist is that you must flirt with the game’s many female characters and successfully woo them in order to obtain special attacks and spells. That’s right: When not fighting baddies and finding goodies, you’ll have to go on dates with some lovely young lasses.
Of course, this is all just filler that eventually leads to a big confrontation with the forces of evil, during which the fate of Meis’s world will hang in the balance. Arms will be packaged as a two-disc set featuring theater-quality animation, over 12 hours of spoken dialogue, and a unique battle system that utilizes a combination of 2D animation and 3D environments and vehicles. The preview version we played showcased smooth graphics that nicely integrated classic RPG gameplay with anime cut-scenes to pace the action, easy-to-navigate menus, and ambient sounds.
If you’re looking for a new twist in RPGs, check out future issues of CamePro for more on this unique title.
Not sure if anyone else here has played it or heard of it. But it’s an RPG with a little bit of dating sim built into it, and the date sim has purposes other than for dating the girls. It’s like the perfect blend of date sim and RPG.

Thousand Arms’ hero is a young lad by the name of Meis Triumph. Meis is the youngest in a long line of Spirit Blacksmiths — a once-respected family line whose honor has diminished over the years as each successor progressively degenerated into a shameless womanizer. The flamboyant Meis certainly carries this trait, but regains his nobility by eventually setting off to save the world after his hometown of Kant is attacked by the mysterious Dark Acolytes. Meis’ power as a blacksmith grants him the unique power to strengthen and improve upon his party’s weapons as players progress through the game.
With each level raised, and with the assistance of a lovely female companion a vital part of the blacksmith process, of course , Meis can imbue a number of elements fire, light, earth, etc into a blade as he strengthens it, as well as add a special attack which depends on the “intimacy level” Meis has with his assistant. It rarely seems useful to pick which element to use on a weapon, but it’s absolutely necessary to reforge weapons often in order to keep attack stats high.
To simply call Thousand Arms “anime-inspired” would be insulting. From the obligatory sweatdrop emotion to the off-beat brand of humor — and the flood of anime artistry, of course — Thousand Arms is as anime-heavy as you can get in an American videogame, but still manages to appeal to a universal audience. Fantastic cel-drawn artwork is used throughout the game, particularly in key scenes where the camera shifts to a full-screen anime scene display with limited animation — a welcome change from the standard top-down sequences.
As well, there are a number of movies which blend hand-drawn anime with CG renders, similar to Xenogears’ intro cinema. The plot may be filled to the brim with tired old RPG cliches, particularly near the end, but like Lunar: Silver Star Story, the storytelling is often more important than the story itself. Atlus USA has done a fantastic job at localizing Thousand Arms in every way possible — while characters are horribly one-dimensional, their singular character traits are exploited in every way possible for laughs.
The tongue-in-cheek dialog is extremely fluid and natural-sounding, and the game never takes itself too seriously. Funny, huh?

Thousand Arms by Atlus is an RPG with a faceted story and intricate gameplay. Keep your date happy and you can get special weapons, information and new.
That’s right, after so many similar RPGs have been released in Japan, Atlus, famous for Ogre Battle and other great titles, finally tests the audience of the U. From old-school RPGamers to those just starting, the word has been to watch this one, and not from a distance. However, it has many merits that may earn it that title anyway. Thousand Arms will not overwhelm you with graphics, or play the game for you in movies. The draw to Thousand Arms is a realism of a different nature.
Anime characters and old style sprites with emoticons, akin to Final Fantasy V, the interaction of the people, and especially the other characters, is what makes Thousand Arms a true experience to play. More than once you may find yourself blushing at the screen, or yelling as your foe falls. The game can be very personal, espcially when you decide it’s time to date your female companions.
Being skeptical that the first dating RPG, I made the assumption the female characters would be extra cautious, making sure not to be too daring, or possibly even the complete lack of innuendo.
